Hope in His Unfailing Love
Psalm 33:18-22: But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.
We put our hope in a lot of things. We hope our car will start each morning. We hope our jobs are secure. We hope our children make wise choices. We hope our marriages don’t fail. It is natural for our hearts to hope–but more often than not, we put our hope in wrong places. We place our hope in things or people that can and often do fail. Even knowing this, we continue to hope in that which can disappoint.
But take heart…there is One in whom we can place our hope that will never fail us. We can firmly and confidently place our hope in the God who loves us. Because his love never fails, it is the only place where we can place our hope and rest securely. Psalm 33 tells us that the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him. He carefully watches over those whose hope is placed in his unfailing love. Imagine God looking your way this very moment. He sees you sitting on your couch or at your desk. He sees you kneeling in prayer. He hears your cries for help and is always watching…always at the ready to meet your needs.
He sustains us through times of famine–emotional as well as physical. He helps us when we are in trouble and shields us from the enemy of our souls. He delivers our weary souls and meets our every need. His loving touch heals our broken hearts and causes those same hearts to rejoice. He accomplishes all of this through his unfailing love. What an amazing truth–God’s love is unfailing. His is the only love that can claim such a distinction. While we love others here in this life, it is not a love without fail. We can love and still wound the ones we love. Not so with God. His is a love that cannot do anything but love with perfection. He loves us when we fail and He loves us when we succeed. He loves us when we are full of faith and He loves us when we are filled with fear. He loves us with an everlasting love.
Because of this, we can trust in his holy name and place our hope fully in Him. May your unfailing love be with us,Lord, even as we put our hope in you.
